More than $1 million in funding to help low-income customers pay water bills is heading for middle and northeast Alabama, including the Birmingham area.
BWWB spokesman Rick Jackson said the utility had been directly involved in the low-income water program’s planning and expressed hope that it would help customers with their bills.
“From August 2022 to date, the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program has assisted 2,232 Birmingham Water Works customers totaling $768,462.82. We are excited for this new round of funding announced by Governor Ivey and are hopeful that many customers in our five-county service area will benefit from it. Birmingham Water Works fully supports this funding, and we will continue our efforts to help all of our customers have the clean high-quality water they have come to expect from us.
Williams said customers should be able to call for assistance within the next month. To qualify, applicants must be low income according to the agency’s guidelines, she said.
