“Developers need to be talking to the people who are most maligned and are most loathed on the internet—and I don’t mean incels,” an AI researcher told Jezebel.
“[The Bing chatbot] is reflecting our culture, which is violent,” says Dr. Olivia Snow, a research fellow at UCLA’s Center for Critical Internet Inquiry who is known for her work at the intersection of technology and gender. “It’s kind of the same thing when I think about these technologies being accessed by the public in general, which is that whatever good purpose they might have, they 100 percent are going to get used for the most depraved purposes possible.
“Developers need to be talking to the people who are most maligned and are most loathed on the internet—and I don’t mean incels, I mean people who are the victims of harassment campaigns,” Snow said. “Because that’s really the only demographic or population that’s going to have first-hand experience of how these tools will get weaponized in ways that most people wouldn’t even begin to think of.
