Now, more than ever, the international community must seize this pivotal moment to restore peace and protect the vulnerable in the beleaguered nation.The United States cannot afford to stand by as civilians in Sudan suffer. It has the capacity and the moral responsibility to leverage its influence and resources for peace. By engaging with regional actors and implementing targeted economic strategies, the U.S.

The status quo presents an opportunity for the U.S. to augment its influence and credibility in Africa, which will yield dividends. The U.S. can help strengthen IGAD’s logistical capacity by implementing confidence-building measures between warring factions in Sudan. This would create a more conducive environment for negotiations. The U.S.

Some of these pressures could center on economic actions. The U.S.’ influence among European and Asian allies can enable the mediators to make a credible threat of economic sanctions against the leaders of the Sudanese military and the RSF, deterring them from attacking civilians or breaking cease-fire agreements.

While the world observes the unfolding events from a distance, my heart aches for the countless innocent civilians who are caught in the crossfire. Merely two weeks before the violence erupted, I was eager to learn about life in Africa and became engrossed in the blog of an international student studying Arabic in Khartoum. His initial posts showcased the vibrant local culture, highlighting the distinctive cuisine and his dormitory experiences.
