The promise made by Sir James Dyson to fulfill an order for 10,000 CoVent ventilators has yet to materialize as U. K. hospitals face the peak of the coronavirus pandemic this weekend.
The U.K. recognized the critical shortage in ventilators in mid March when Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s call for the U.K.’s brightest and best entrepreneurs to help design and build an entirely new ventilator reached Dyson .
–The CoVent–would be “manufactured quickly, efficiently and at volume” and would “address the specific clinical needs of Covid-19 patients.”So far U.K. hospitals have reportedly received just a small number of the 22,000 ventilators needed to take the U.K.’s number up to 30,000. On Saturday Britain received 300 ventilators from China. Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove confirmed in a news conference: “We’ve been buying invasive ventilators from partners abroad, including Germany and Switzerland, and today 300 new ventilators arrived from China, I’d like to thank the Chinese government.
Another London doctor said that the Dyson ventilators were, “a while off,” and not part of their planning for this weekend. On the current ventilator need he told, “We’re ok at the moment … it’s been steady here but hasn’t gone nuts at any point.” There remains a chance that the new ventilators will arrive at the time of their greatest need if the U.K.’s self-isolation measures are effective in delaying the peak of hospital admissions.
Another doctor who has been redeployed from her speciality describes the current mood on the wards as, “the calm before the storm.” But adds that the time to get new equipment installed is now. NHS England has been approached for comment.
