Senators are trying again to rid Pennsylvania of the ban on teachers wearing religious symbols while on the job. Pennsylvania is the last state in the nation to have such a law on the books.
Pennsylvania public school teachers would be able to wear religious emblems, insignia and garb while on the job under legislation that unanimously passed the state Senate on Wednesday. It would strike downthat for a teacher to be suspended for a year or fired for multiple offenses, and makes public school directors criminally liable if they fail to enforce it.
“This law was the reason a teacher in Indiana County who wore a necklace with a cross was forced to remove or cover the necklace or risk losing her job,” said Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill, R-York County. “She was suspended but eventually rehired after a lengthy federal court battle.”. Since then, Nebraska, the only other state that had such a law on the books, repealed it five years ago.along with Sen.
