We chat with BigGeorgeForeman director George_Tillman about creating visceral fight scenes and the inspirational nature of George Foreman’s life:
The upcoming film Big George Foreman is more than a biopic; it’s an inspirational story about perseverance, determination, and faith made to impact viewers with or without knowledge of the sport of boxing. Two-time world heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman made history at age 45 as the oldest person ever to win the title, but Big George Foreman also explores the time Foreman spent out of the ring.
George Tillman Jr.: Yeah, the "why"; what was driving George. I just remember him talking about the moment of when, in his youth, everybody wrote him off. [How] "nobody from the Fifth Ward goes anywhere," or [how] when he comes to school dressed a certain way, teachers would just pass on him. "[They] don't even spend time. How can anybody write me off?"
George Tillman Jr.: I remember in the earliest draft, Archie Moore was a very connecting tissue in the narrative. George made us aware Archie was there, but Doc Broadus was something that was very important his life. He met him in the Job Corps. So, Archie went a step back [and] Doc Broadus us went up, just from having conversations.
George Tillman Jr.: Yeah. I always felt the main thing when I was just reading through the material and talking to George was [that] I was laughing at certain moments. Especially during the comeback in real life. When I heard that a 38-year-old man was going to try to win the heavyweight championship belt and lose that weight, that was very tough for anybody to do, and as a young man, I thought it was funny. I wanted to have that humor.
George Tillman Jr.: The key for me was to try to be as authentic and real as possible. I spent all of 2019 and the pandemic studying every fight, breaking down the rounds, breaking down the moments, giving that to my fight coach Darrell Foster who worked with Will Smith on Ali, [who got to] breaking these things down. My approach was, "Let's punch for real. Let's not do any of these stunt punches and missing each other. Let's fight.
