The U.S. government plans to restart its controversial “Remain in Mexico” program for asylum seekers on Monday, according to multiple reports, a move that comes after the Biden administration was ordered by a federal court to reinstate the program.

reported late Wednesday that the American and Mexican governments had agreed on protocols to reinstate the Trump-era policy.

The program will then reportedly go into effect next week in San Diego, California and the Texas cities of Brownsville, Laredo and El Paso.by Axios, the Biden administration is planning to offer coronavirus vaccines to asylum seekers placed in the program, but the shots will not be mandatory. The program officially known as Migrant Protection Protocols program will initially be targeted at single-adult asylum seekers.Despite being ordered to reinstate the plan by a federal court, the Biden administration has been critical of the program and is still attempting to formally roll it back. : “MPP had endemic flaws, imposed unjustifiable human costs, pulled resources and personnel away from other priority efforts, and did not address the root causes of irregular migration.”President Joe Biden previously condemned the Trump-era MPP as inhumane and quickly scrapped it after taking office earlier this year. More than 60,000 asylum seekers were sent to Mexico by the Trump administration under the MPP program, many of whom fell prey to violent attacks, human rights group.
