Multiple Power Five programs reportedly tried to poach Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy following a strong spring. Though he remained in Austin, it was just another reminder of how important re-recruiting has become.
AUSTIN, TEXAS - APRIL 15: Maalik Murphy #6 of the Texas Longhorns hands off to Ky Woods #29 during the Texas Football Orange-White Spring Football Game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 15, 2023 in Austin, Texas.AUSTIN – Last week, Chris Hummer of 247Sports reported “multiple” SEC schools and at least one school from the Big Ten and Pac-12 had reached out to Texas’ backup quarterback in an effort to poach him from the program.
As coach Steve Sarkisian and other coaches across just about every NCAA-sanctioned sport have lamented, the job isn’t over when you win the first recruiting war and get that signed letter of intent.
“I think one, we have to say to ourselves, it’s a reality, right?” Sarkisian said Wednesday at the Texas Fight Tour in San Antonio, per the Austin American-Statesman. “That’s going to happen. I don’t think we can walk around with our heads in the sand saying that,’ Hey, we’re gonna recruit good players and it’s just gonna be great and no one’s gonna try to come poach our guys.’”be eyeing an exit due to the talent around him.
“I think the sky’s the limit for the guy,” Sarkisian said after Murphy finished 9 of 13 for 165 yards with a 79-yard touchdown pass. “He is really talented and I thought he showed today with making some of the throws that he did.”Redshirt sophomore Quinn Ewers tightened his grip on the starting job this spring. And early enrollee Arch Manning, the top-ranked freshman in the nation, was already adored by the national media who had no real clue about the team’s actual depth chart hierarchy.
