Good luck trying to dismantle entrenched structures and processes, says AtheneDonald — but don’t give up, support is out there
The data show that the system, however unintentionally, is biased against women. This is slowly changing, as funders and publishers work to modify their processes to overcome the collective bias. Junior researchers cannot single-handedly dismantle the biased structures and processes that still lurk. But they can find the support they need to thrive.The first piece of advice I would give is not to be frightened to ask for guidance.
Catch them during a tea break, or send an e-mail asking for help, perhaps to read a draft grant application or your CV. Or perhaps you want their help in finding a way through a more political impasse, such as needing to frame a request for more time on some expensive equipment, more laboratory space or asking for funding to go to a big international conference. They might cast light on strategies that worked for them.
