Bexar County elections officials, Calvert spar over reduced voting sites
People line up to vote at Brook Hollow Library in San Antonio, Texas, on May 7, 2022. People voted on the city's bond package, two state propositions on property taxes, school district seats and/or bonds and suburban elections.Bexar County residents are alleging voter suppression, particularly on the West Side, as election officials“The people who are being targeted are minorities, the young and the elderly,” resident Maria Green said at Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting.
Jacque Callanen, elections administrator, said changes over the last few years made the elections process more efficient. In 2020, Callanen said, there were 300 polling locations. After the November 2020 election, the number dropped to 289 through May. Since then, there have been 258 sites, and that’s what the Bexar Elections Commission proposed for this coming November.
“They know better than this, to think that they can sneak this through,” Calvert said, lambasting the reduction of six polling sites from the West Side and every college that was previously on the 2020 ballot. “Everyone from Henry B. Gonzalez in the grave to Ray Charles in the grave can see what’s going on with these cuts.”Callanen said she had not heard back from Calvert for two weeks after she asked him to call superintendents in his precinct to request the Nov.
At one point, as officials clarified with the county attorney whether the Commissioners Court could add polling sites, the county attorney said only the elections board can hire or fire Callanen. That’s when someone in the audience yelled, “Fire her!”“We look at turnout,” Callanen said. The sites eliminated from the current total were locations that had a historically low turnout — fewer than 50 votes in the 12-hour period they were open.
