Arizona RepublicWe’ve reached the midpoint of the 2019 azcentral Wine & Food Experience and I’m already stuffed to the gills.The annual event spans two days and features dozens of metro Phoenix restaurants as they put their best foot forward for the world to see. As usual, there’s too much delicious stuff to cover it all. But I’ve tasted every nibble, and here are the standouts from Saturday’s festivities.
Add some tart tomatillo salsa, a swift kick from some fresh jalapeno relish and a little sweetness from touch of orange marmalade, and you had one of the best bites of the day.Hot chicken bun with banana and scorpion pepper hot sauce and pickled pineapple from Clever Koi at the 2019 azcentral Wine & Food Experience at Salt River Fields near Scottsdale.
A simple, steaming broth — loaded with shrimp, hominy and fresh slivered radish — had a gentle seafood scent and a nice herbaceous punch. When they emerged, they were a delight — charred and juicy, heavy with smoke and dressed with a bright red pepper puree and a drizzle of sweet balsamic.Warm roasted squash salad with whipped feta and garlic chips from Mowry & Cotton at the 2019 azcentral Wine & Food Experience at Salt River Fields near Scottsdale.This was the perfect festival bite — uncomplicated, beautiful to behold and boasting some big flavor.
