Even the Boston Marathon bomber should have the right to vote, says Bernie Sanders

The Vermont senator and Democratic presidential hopeful was asked at a CNN town hall Monday night if he thought felons should be allowed to vote, even while they’re incarcerated. “This is a democracy and we have got to expand that democracy, and I believe every single person does have the right to vote,” Sanders said. Enfranchising people like Dzhokhar Tsarnaev — the U.S.

Buttigieg left poor behind, some say: Buttigieg, meanwhile, is facing some criticism from residents of his home town’s poor neighborhoods, CNBC reports. Outside of South Bend’s downtown, the city’s economic life is in a holding pattern, the report says. Poorer residents say they see little of their mayor and complain about city dollars going to neighborhoods they see as already well-off. Economic inequality and racial justice are expected to feature in the fight for the Democratic nomination.

Harris for impeachment: Another headline from the CNN town halls was Harris’ call for impeaching President Donald Trump, a position that’s not shared widely among the other candidates. Harris, writes the Associated Press, said Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s recently released report “tells us that this president and his administration engaged in obstruction of justice.” The California senator said she believes Congress should take the steps toward impeachment.

Weld’s candidacy praised: Kevin Mahnken writes in the New Republic that he doesn’t expect former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld to defeat Trump in the GOP primary. But, Mahnken says, Weld’s candidacy “isn’t a joke, either on its own terms or as a response to Trump.” In Weld’s run the writer sees “a chance to tilt at one more windmill as the Last Rockefeller Republican.
