Bernie Sanders accuses liberal think tank Center for American Progress of smearing 2020 progressives like Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker
Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders sent a fiery letter to Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank long associated with establishment Democrats, accusing the group of smearing progressive 2020 presidential candidates, including Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker.
Sanders said conservatives and right-wing news outlets have"excitedly" re-published any and all reports critical of himself and other progressive candidates. Despite these allegations against CAP, numerous polls and totals from initial fundraising efforts show Sanders as a frontrunner in the crowded 2020 Democratic presidential candidate field.
Sanders said CAP and its affiliates have led the charge in floating stories critical of himself, Booker and Warren to right-wing news outlets. A video produced last week by ThinkProgress entitled,"Bernie's Millionaire Problem," criticized Sanders by attempting to paint him as a hypocrite for asking wealthy Americans to pay their"fair share" in taxes.
“One of the things I do worry about sometimes among progressives in the United States—maybe it’s true here as well—is a certain kind of rigidity where we say, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, this is how it’s going to be. And then we start sometimes creating what’s called a 'circular firing squad' where you start shooting at your allies because one of them is straying from purity on the issues."
