A damning new report found one in five children in Northern Ireland now live in poverty
Laura*, not her real name, is one of a number of parents who will be sharing their stories about how the welfare system is making their lives worse with Stormont decision makers on Friday.
Of that figure, 38% are parents or carers who are also working; 37% also have a health condition, disability or caring responsibilities while 25% of parents or carers on UC are looking for work. Save the Children has found that the current welfare support system is exacerbating families’ already challenging circumstances and that people are calling for a system which offers agency, choice and dignity.
