Ben Stokes was rendered speechless afteropener Zak Crawley set the tone for the Ashes series aby hammering the first ball of the Edgbaston Test for four.
The England skipper put his openers in to bat after winning the toss, hoping to take advantage of what looked like a placid pitch. Crawley instantly rewarded that faith by taking no time to size up Australia skipper Pat Cummins and hammering the ball to the offside boundary on the up. The first ball of the Ashes has acquired a mythology of its own in recent times, from Steve Harmison’s massive wide in 2006 to Mitchell Starc smashing Rory Burns’ leg stump 18 months ago.
This time it was England who landed an early psychological blow, with Crawley crashing Cummins’ opening delivery handsomely through the covers for four.
