The Bellaire Lady Cardinals celebrate after beating Stratford 18-1 on April 29 at the Stratford softball field to complete the sweep in the best-of-three bi-district playoff seriesOn Wednesday evening, the Bellaire Lady Cardinals beat the Stratford Lady Spartans 5-3 in the first game of the best-of-three bi-district playoff series at the Butler Sports Complex.
“We played pretty well on Wednesday night, but we didn’t have quality at-bats,” said Bellaire coach Brien Tufly. “We won 5-3, which I’m proud of, but we had much better depth tonight.”The Lady Cardinals got out to a 2-0 lead after one inning after Meaghan Lande hit a two-RBI bloop single to shallow right field that fell between the first baseman, second baseman, and right fielder.
Two of the runs in Bellaire’s six-run third inning, which saw 12 batters come to the plate, came on a two-RBI single to right-centerfield by freshman Bella Rivera. “That’s key ,” said Tuffly. “Most lineups you’ll see don’t get hits from more than four or five top batters.
