The Ice Kings are notable for being Dallas’ first organized ice hockey team that played against other cities. Jim Riley served as team captain, but he is more well-known for being the only athlete in history to play in both Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League. The Ice Kings played for only a few short years, and Gardner’s Ice Palace burned down in 1934.
Linz believed ice hockey could be popular in Dallas, and he marketed the sport as a violent, chaotic affair. “You can’t use a gun in ice hockey but practically nothing else is barred,” read an advertisement inAn illustration that accompanied one of eight articles by Texans coach Leroy Goldsworthy to explain how ice hockey works. Published in The Dallas Morning News on Oct. 30, 1941.
The Texans’ games were memorable, in part because they were violent, just as Linz advertised. Attendees remembered fights on the rink and in the stands. No one wore helmets or face masks — not even the goalies — so blood was a common sight. Years later, Linz claimed the Texans broke more bones and suffered more injuries than any other professional hockey team up to that point.
