First Look: ‘Beef,’ starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, centers on a pair of strangers whose road rage incident spirals out of control.
begins with road rage, it veers off into many unexpected directions, as we watch two people from very different walks of life who are dealing with societal and familial pressures that are about to reach a boiling point.
There are plenty of darkly comedic moments that allow Wong to show off that strength, but the role would end up pushing Wong to her limits, says Lee. “Amy seems like someone who’s been struggling with sort of existential dread for a much longer time [than Danny],” says Lee. “And to have that sort of weight on you as an actor, sometimes actors cannot 100% commit, because it is taxing. But Ali did not hold back.
Catfishing, robbery, and blackmail are among the many misdeeds committed by Amy and Danny, whom Lee compares to the malcontents of] and those writers do such an incredible job with Tony and all the characters on the show, where for every time they do something horrible, you just have to have some sort of glimpse of humanity for the audience to then forget,” says Lee.
