A black bear weighing at least 400 pounds clawed and bit the woman about 7 p.m. Monday outside her home in Sparta before dragging her English Springer Spaniel into the woods and mauling it to death, authorities said. The woman, whose name has been withheld, was taken to Newton Medical Center where she received seven stitches to close the wound to her leg from a bear bite. She was released from the hospital Monday night, police said.
