For the first time in two years, people began lining up early on Saturday in Mobile to donate leftover Mardi Gras beads in exchange for a Krispy Kreme voucher.
pandemic occurred nearly two years ago, and only a few days before Augusta Evans Special School was preparing to host its annual Beads for Doughnuts fundraiser.
A few hours into Saturday’s event, a large box of beads was filling up as the donations began pouring back in. The donations go toward assisting the school’s Mardi Gras beads program, which consists of approximately 50 students, ages 18-21. The school’s overall enrollment is 242 students. Sigler said the program is a popular one, since it becomes an immersive learning experience about the region’s popular Carnival tradition.
