Ainsdale Beach evacuation down to metal detector 'playing up' as no item found
A tranquil beach being enjoyed by sunseekers quickly turned into a police scene after a 'wartime device' was reportedly found by a metal detectorist.
Anyone in the immediate vicinity was asked to temporarily vacate the area and an area of the beach roughly the size of a football pitch was cordoned off. Police later said the incident was down to a metal detector 'playing up' and no item was found following a search.An eyewitness said that there were a number of police vehicles at the scene including quad bikes, two police vans and a 4x4. Pictures showed the use of a metal detector around a hole that had been dug within the cordon.
"There was no panic or anything but they didn’t really tell us what was going or that it was anything too serious." Merseyside Police later told ITV Granada a search of the beach then revealed no item was found, and the detectorist said his metal detector had been 'playing up'. The incident was stood down at approximately 2pm.
