Radio 2's Steve Wright, who joined the BBC in the 70s, died at the age of 69 – now a friend has said what he believed triggered Steve's tragic passing as his family is 'devastated'
The world was shocked when it was announced on Tuesday, 13 February, that Steve had died suddenly, aged 69.
Gary said that Steve was left "devastated" at the news of the show's cancellation, telling The Sun: “Steve lived for that show, he absolutely loved it - and the listeners loved him. My view is that he died from a broken heart.”The presenter's family released a heartfelt statement which read: "It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright.
"Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK's most enduring and popular radio personalities.BBC director general Tim Davie said he was "heartbroken" to hear the tragic news as he shared a statement. He said: "All of us at the BBC are heartbroken to hear this terribly sad news.
"No-one had more energy to deliver shows that put a smile on audiences' faces. They loved him deeply. We are thinking of Steve and his family and will miss him terribly."
