Is BigHero6 more connected with Disney or the MCU? Baymax voice actor Scott Adsit weighs in on the debate: 'I connected more to a Disney pantheon ... John Lasseter [said], 'You are now on the same shelf as Peter Pan and Pinocchio'.'🤔

Big Hero 6's Baymax voice actor has weighed in the film's relationship to Disney and Marvel Studios. Big Hero 6 was first released in theatres in 2014 and found such success that it won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. However, this isn’t the only accolade the film holds. Big Hero 6 is also the first Marvel Comics-based film following Disney’s acquisition of the company.

In the movie, Hiro inherits Baymax, a robot designed to assist with medical needs, after his brother is tragically killed in an explosion. Baymax is later refitted and reprogrammed to fight crime after Hiro discovers that a kabuki-masked villain is using stolen technology to create weapons that threaten the wellbeing of San Fransokyo.

"I connected more to a Disney pantheon. I remember at the first screening we ever did, John Lasseter, who was in charge of the studio, said to the Big Hero 6, the six of us, 'You are now on the same shelf as Peter Pan and Pinocchio. You are part of that family.' That's where I really connected." Adsit’s description does appear to lend credit to those that believe the movie doesn’t quite fit into the MCU. Disney's blundering and loveable Baymax is a far cry from his monstrous comic counterpart. Additionally, the animation style, Adsit’s recollection of the way the film was presented to the cast, and the fact that Big Hero 6 is often omitted from lists of MCU films, all seems to affirm his views.

Big Hero 6 is unique in the fact that it has a distinct family-orientated Disney feel, but is also heavily rooted in Marvel origins and shared connections to the MCU. Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee even makes a cameo in the movie, similar to his appearances in the live-action MCU films. Even so, Big Hero 6 does lack significant connections with the rest of the MCU and will likely be considered more embedded within Disney unless deeper universe links are explored in the future.
