A project reportedly long in the making, “The Gun Next Door” features images the Berkeley-based photographer took of Bay Area residents with their firearms. Responding to the heated national debate over firearms ownership and gun control, Dater sought to challenge preconceptions of what kinds of people own guns and why they own them.
The iconic photographer, who was the subject of a retrospective exhibit at the de Young Museum in San Francisco in 2018, is likely best known for her series of photos starring the groundbreaking woman photographer Imogen Cunningham — particularly a playful shot of Cunningham encountering a “nymph” in Yosemite.
In the Bard’s “Titus,” set in ancient Rome, the eponymous emperor returns home from war with a few prisoners, who then wreak revenge upon him. Rape, mutilation and murder are the orders of the day; body parts are baked into a pie, served to the victims’ mother before she too is killed. Ultimately almost everyone dies and the palace is a shambles.
