Scientists develop 3D-printed artificial knee

David Tarbet was one of the first five patients in the country to have a new type of knee operationScientists have developed a 3D-printed implant to help patients suffering osteoarthritis in their knee.

The 3D HTO plates are used to realign a patient's knee, making them more stable, comfortable and better able to bear weight than existing generic plates. The stabilising plate is then put on top, allowing the digital creation to become a surgical reality. Working with the university to develop the product Prof Andrew Toms, director of orthopaedics at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, said that for patients between the ages of 40 and 60, having a total knee replacement is not an easy option as it won't last long enough.
