Our chat with Lower Decks' supervising director!
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4, Episodes 1 & 2!Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 has new threats and new ranks for the Lower Deckers, and supervising director Brian J. Kelly directed the season 4 premiere, which brings back Star Trek: Voyager's signature starship.
Mike always says that in season 3, for some reason, stuff peaks, and hopefully, [Lower Decks] is starting to peak the surface, and everyone's understanding that these characters are really strong, and they're great, and we can't keep them in the same place. They're gonna keep growing and leveling up in their jobs, because they're super skilled and super talented Starfleet Officers.
On that note, with the potential of new eyes checking out Lower Decks, was there any impact in making season 4? If a general audience is coming in, or a new Star Trek audience is coming in, did you make any adjustments or cater to them in some way? Brian J. Kelly: I don't think we've done much ensemble acting. I always find with cartoons, there's a beauty to doing both. ln an ensemble, you can get some energy that maybe you didn't think you could, but sometimes in that respect, with ensemble acting, when the characters are bouncing off each other, they might do the same thing as they repeat lines. Andrea Romano is a classic voice director.
And the Easter eggs. The episode's got a little bit of a spoiler in the title, "Twovix, but we get to have a fun voyage. It's a Voyager storyline on the Cerritos and a Voyager chaotic mess on Voyager, which is super fun. Yeah, getting to do the holograms, it's always the weirder aspects of Voyager that we want to tag onto.
Brian J. Kelly: Yeah, even down to when Riker sang the lyrics of the song. That cracked me up the first time I read it.
