Kevorian Barnes breaks through for two touchdowns, helping UTSA push to win at FIU
UTSA running back Kevorian Barnes warms up against Texas before an NCAA football game on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in Austin, Texas. MIAMI — MIAMI — UTSA’s offense took the field Friday with a converted defensive lineman and a walk-on starting at offensive tackle, and by halftime leading running backs Brenden Brady and Trelon Smith were shut down due to injury.
UTSA posted one of its most stout performances of the year on defense, limiting FIU to 4.3 yards per play. Corey Mayfield hauled in just the third interception of the year for UTSA after Trevor Harmanson deflected a pass at the line, and the Roadrunners forced six punts and three turnovers on downs on 13 FIU drives. The Panthers’ lone touchdown came in the final minute of the fourth quarter.
UTSA’s offense stumbled out of the gate, punting on its first possession and then turning the ball over on a fumble when Harris was hit from behind, leading to a scoreless first quarter. Brady ran seven times for 19 yards, but five of those carries came on UTSA’s opening drive. He did not return to the field after a 14-yard catch during the second quarter.
