AKRON, Ohio – Barberton resident Robert Greathouse earned his Associate of Technical Studies degree from the University of Akron on Monday – some 65 years after he started taking classes at the university.
“Today you become the oldest student to earn a degree in the history of the University of Akron,” University of Akron President Gary Miller said at the ceremony. “Mr. Greathouse began his coursework in 1958 – 65 years ago. You are indeed an inspiration to me, and to everyone in this room. Like many of our students, you have shown a deep resolve, not only to become educated, but to continue to learn throughout life. I congratulate you.
“I deeply appreciate the University of Akron because here I was able to get the tools that I needed in order to get ahead and that’s what the whole thing was all about,” Greathouse said. “I enjoyed the approximately 20 years of school that I spent here. I liked the classes, I liked the instructors and the students particularly.”
