The deepest-ever playoff run for Baldwin softball ended in Wednesday's state semifinal.
Baldwin narrowed the gap in the bottom of the frame on Cali Hartung's RBI double to score Rylan Gray but couldn't complete the comeback against a Clearwater Calvary Christian team that included four regulars from 2021 Class 2A champion Canterbury.
Baldwin had forced extra innings on a pair of solo home runs. Senior Kayla Robinson went deep in the fifth inning, and sophomore catcher Hartung homered to tie the score in the sixth. The Indians, winners of the Gateway Conference championship last month, were playing in their first-ever semifinal. Aside from Robinson and Young, almost the entire roster is scheduled to return for 2023, including eighth-grade starters Chloe Gotto and Jazmine Ramos-Merced.
