More than 100 people trying to evacuate from the devastated Bahamas were told to get off a ferry bound for the U.S. if they didn't have visas.

Current immigration rules state that people from the Bahamas can enter the U.S. by plane without a visa — they just need a valid Bahamian passport and a clean police record — if they obtain pre-clearance at the airport of origin. But since the Freeport Airport in the Bahamas — one of the two where travelers can get that pre-clearance — isn’t operational right now, cruise ships and ferries are some of the only ways out for people fleeing Dorian’s devastation.

This is what I’m learning from passengers: normally Bahamians can FLY to the USA with their passport and a clean police record. Bc of the hurricane, the rules were changed and they could also come to US under those conditions on ferries and ships. They’ve been doing that for daysWhat is interesting is cruise ship Grand Celebration evacuted more than 1000 Bahamians Friday and they did not require visas — was ok to just have passport and police record.
