Versatile San Diego State junior can play shortstop, center field or catcher, impressed scouts at MLB Combine, projects as first- or second-round pick
Cole Carrigg’s path to professional baseball took a left turn three years ago when the COVID-19 pandemic ground everything to a halt. That also curtailed his development as a potential high-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, which was reduced that season to just five rounds.“We only played five games that year,” Carrigg said. “I was only getting better, stronger and faster.
Said SDSU coach Mark Martinez: “Anybody that comes to college, there’s growth and experience ... It helped him grow as a man and get himself to the point where he plays the game with a calmer presence. I think that’s the best way to put it.” He has a chance to become the eighth SDSU player in school history selected in the first round. Right-hander Stephen Strasburg was the last one, taken first overall in 2009 by the Washington Nationals.SDSU’s Cole Carrigg has a chance to be the eighth player in school history selected in the first round of the MLB Draft.
“After that, I felt like I put myself in a hole,” he said. “Everything kind of poured on to me at that point, thinking too much, trying to do too much. I tried to dig myself out of that and it made things a lot harder. Carrigg helped himself at last month’s MLB Draft Combine in Phoenix, where pro scouts saw him swing the bat in BP with some authority.
At the University of San Diego, 1B/OF Kevin Sim , is the No. 150-ranked player by mlb.com and projected to be selected as high as the fourth round.
