'I'm not just a one hit wonder when it comes to pizza,' said the pizza chef.
Meyer first began working with renowned pizza chef Tony Gemignani after meeting in 2006, and then went on to become the head chef at Tony's Pizza for six years. Up until last week, she was the head chef at Capo's, a Chicago-style pizza restaurant also owned by Gemignani.
Despite being an award-winning pizza chef , she said she never considered opening her own restaurant until recently, after launching a successful focaccia pop-up in 2021. "It wasn't until COVID that I really started to consider my own project and my own restaurant," Meyer told SFGATE."Yeah, it really wasn't until COVID that I was like, 'OK, I'm ready for change. I'm ready to try this.' And then [the pop-up] was successful enough to kind of give me the confidence to pursue opening and you know, what all that entails."
Meyer told SFGATE that Pizzeria da Laura will open in the former Passione Emporio space in downtown Berkeley, which was at 2049 Shattuck Ave. — although the address of her restaurant will be different due to construction in the area. Opening in Berkeley as opposed to San Francisco was a very intentional decision for her."I'm born and raised in the East Bay, and I live in Oakland," she said."... You know, I've spent a lot of my youth here.
"I'm going to try and bring something that maybe Berkeley doesn't really have a lot of," she said."I'm very experienced and well-versed in a lot of the different styles of pizza out there. You know, I'm not just a one-hit wonder when it comes to pizza ... and so I think I'm going to bring some versatility to Berkeley."
