Before Monday’s game, manager Bud Black reiterated that Gomber — who entered the game with a 12.12 ERA — had simply failed to command his fastball, thus making his changeup and curveball ineffective pitches. But Gomber was mostly on-point Monday, finishing his night with three hits allowed, three walks and three strikeouts. In the first inning, he gave up a leadoff double to Steven Kwan and a two-out walk to Josh Bell but escaped by getting Andres Gimenez to ground out to short. In the fifth, Gomber issued a leadoff walk to Mike Zunino and a one-out walk to Kwan but induced Amed Rosario into an inning-ending double play.
Colorado broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning, sending nine men to the plate and cashing in on two-run singles by rookie shortstop Ezequiel Tovar and Profar.
