FILE - In this June 2018 file photo, protesters walk along Montana Avenue outside the El Paso Processing Center in El Paso, Texas. A few Indian nationals seeking asylum in the U.S. have been forced to receive IV drips at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Texas as they approach their third week of a hunger strike, according to their attorney.
The men have been locked up for months — one for more than a year — and they are trying to appeal or reopen asylum claims that were denied, according to Corchado. As of Sunday, they had gone 20 days without food, she said. “All ten ICE detainees have missed at least nine consecutive meals, triggering ICE hunger-strike protocols,” agency spokesman Timothy Oberle said in a statement. “The ICE Health Services Corps is medically monitoring the detainees’ health and regularly updating ICE of their medical status. Efforts are being taken to protect the detainees’ health and privacy.”
One of the men told the AP on Tuesday that he overheard medical staff say they were being transferred to El Paso for force-feeding.
