The amended legislation now calls for a state monitor in investigate in-custody deaths and then recommend fixes
Colleen Garot, a mother of two, now requires around-the-clock care at a skilled nursing facility.
“I am pleased with these amendments as they, in my opinion, strengthen SB 519,” he said, referring to the bill’s designated number. “They lessen the fiscal impact to the county while permitting a local entity to exert a level of control by calling for an audit or review.” Legislation aimed at preventing people from dying in custody won the support of a state Senate committee but not of the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board.
The legislation, she said, “has a lot of potential” and was unlike anything she has seen in other states.
