AT&T's sales department knew about and encouraged the widespread fraud, the lawsuit says. : A group of investors have sued AT&T alleging that the company’s senior management pressured employees into creating fake accounts for AT&T’s live TV streaming service DirecTV Now in an attempt to artificially inflate subscriber numbers.
A common practice, the lawsuit alleges, involved employees pretending to waive an upgrade fee for customers who use AT&T as their mobile phone carrier. Then, employees would use fake email addresses and the customer’s financial information to charge that fee anyway while signing them up for up to three DirecTV Now accounts.
