Dozens more people injured in the blaze and death toll may still rise, emergency services say
At least 73 people have died in a fire that ripped through a multi-storey building in Johannesburg,More than 50 others have been injured in the blaze in the country’s largest city and the death toll could still rise, emergency services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning. Most of it has been extinguished and a search for victims continues. Mr Mulaudzi said a team of firefighters has already retrieved a number of bodies but more people could be trapped inside. They are currently working their way from floor to floor but the chances of anyone being found alive hours after the fire broke out was “very slim”, he said.Seven of the victims were children, the youngest a one-year-old. “Over 20 years in the service, I’ve never come across something like this,” Mr Mulaudzi added.
He described the building where the fire broke out as an “informal settlement” where homeless people had moved looking for accommodation.Strings of sheets and other materials were seen hanging out of some windows. Mgcini Tshwaku, a local government official, said there were indications that people lit fires inside the building to keep warm in the winter cold.
