Astros' Yordan Alvarez named American League Player of the Week after monster output

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez was announced Monday as the American League Player of the Week for Sept. 12-18, a stretch in which he led the league in home runs, slugging percentage and runs. Alvarez batted .520 with a .556 on-base percentage and 1.280 slugging percentage for the week. He had 10 RBIs, 10 runs, four doubles and five home runs — including a three-homer game Friday against Oakland, which put him in company alongside Glenn Davis and Jeff Bagwell as the only Astros in franchise history with multiple three-homer games.
Alvarez previously earned a weekly award in June, when he was also named AL Player of the Month. Third baseman Alex Bregman is the only other Astros player to earn Player of the Week honors this season, April 7-10.• Astros catcher Martín Maldonado got a day off Monday after he hit 4-for-4 with four RBI in Houston’s 11-2 win over Oakland on Sunday.
• Righthander Hunter Brown, who made his first two big league appearances in a pair of traditional starts for the Astros, was once again available out of the bullpen for Monday’s game against the Rays, Astros manager Dusty Baker said.
