After Jeremy Peña’s double chased New York starter Jameson Taillon off the mound, Yankees manager Aaron Boone inserted righthanded reliever Clarke Schmidt and had him intentionally walk Yordan Alvarez. Schmidt then unintentionally walked Alex Bregman, loading the bases for Houston’s regular-season leader in RBIs and bases-loaded hits.
Tucker took two breaking balls from Schmidt for a 1-1 count. The third pitch was a 96-mph sinker grooved belt-high to the outside edge of the plate, where Tucker typically seeks contact but with a high margin for error. Tucker bounced it hard up the middle and into an inning-ending double play. The play decreased the Astros’ chances to win the game by 19 percent, according to the win probability added metric used by Statcast. And although the Astros did go on to beat the Yankees 4-2, the issues exemplified by Tucker’s bases-loaded double play remain pronounced.
The Astros have more playoff wins and home runs than they do playoff hits with runners in scoring position. They are batting a dismal 4-for-32 with men in scoring position, worse than every other team that has played in the 2022 postseason except for two.
