He seemed slump-proof while working his way into American League Most Valuable Player conversation.
“At the moment, I’m not happy with some of the pitches I’ve been swinging at,” Alvarez said through an interpreter. “But I think that’s just part of the game, just try to continue to make adjustments, swing at better pitches and continue working on it.” For a lineup with four underperforming positions to achieve anything, Alvarez and Kyle Tucker must snap out of their slumps. Asking them to carry the team is too daunting a task, but both must more resemble their All-Star selves than they’ve shown.The two men entered Wednesday’s game in a combined 10-for-99 slide. Tucker had not homered since July 26. Alvarez did not have one since July 29. Both supplied solo home runs against the Rangers to end that slide.
“We have that passing the baton approach,” acting manager Joe Espada said. “Once everyone is contributing and everyone is doing their part, everyone clicks in and it becomes contagious. Right now there are some gaps in there, but once we all start swinging the bat how we’re capable of, it’s a dynamic offense.”
