Astros' Hunter Brown labors through spring debut, struggles with command
In his Grapefruit League debut Wednesday, Astros rookie Hunter Brown had issues with command and adjusting to MLB's new pitch clock.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The one question surrounding Hunter Brown surfaced again Wednesday. Scouts and rival evaluators have long wondered whether he can throw enough strikes to stick as a starting pitcher in the major leagues. Brown silenced the noise somewhat last September, throwing 67 percent of his pitches for strikes during 20 ⅓ major league innings.
“He was a little excited, trying to do too much,” catcher Martín Maldonado said after Houston’s 4-4 tie against the Boston Red Sox.Brown needed 32 pitches to procure three outs. Just 16 of them were strikes. He forced home two runs, one with a bases-loaded walk and another after plunking Greg Allen with the bases loaded.
