The Astros did not place second baseman Jose Altuve on the 60-day injured list.

Matijevic and Bligh Madris for assignment on Thursday to clear spots on their 40-man roster for César Salazar and Corey Julks.
In a bigger surprise, the team did not place second baseman Jose Altuve on the 60-day injured list, offering at least some hope he can return before June. Altuve underwent surgery on his fractured thumb earlier this month and, according to general manager Dana Brown, is two months away from resuming baseball activities.
By not placing Altuve on the 60-day injured list, the team projected at least some optimism he could return before May 29. Both Madris and Matijevic are 27 years old and had outside shots to make the team's opening day roster as lefthanded bench bats. The team opted to give Julks, a longtime minor leaguer who impressed in spring training, a chance to prove himself at the major league level instead.
Houston has seven days to either pass Matijevic and Madris through outright waivers, trade or release them. If both players go unclaimed on waivers, the Astros can outright them to Class AAA Sugar Land.
