WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A spring training that started with over-the-top optimism will end without contract extensions for either Kyle Tucker or Framber Valdez, Astros general manager Dana Brown said on Saturday, acknowledging a fate that felt foregone for the past few weeks.
Brown set March 9 as a soft deadline for finalizing an extension in spring training for both Tucker and Valdez. When the day passed with no movement, it signaled a stalemate between the two sides. Jose Altuve’s fractured thumb also forced Brown to devote more attention to pressing needs. “The talks continued all the way up to the end and I’m just not able to disclose how close we got,” Brown added. “We were in deep conversations, put it that way.”
