Valdez got his pitch count up early and then did the same with a breaking ball to Cubs leadoff hitter Christopher Morel in the fourth inning. With a big swing, Morel tied the game and the Astros blew their big early lead, but rebounded late with Bregman’s fifth homer of the year. The Astros jumped on the Cubs in the first inning while plenty of fans were still finding their seats, thanks to a two-RBI double by José Abreu, an RBI single by Jeremy Pena and an RBI double by Chas McCormick off Taillon. All scored with two outs – just as Bregman’s go-ahead homer occurred after Jake Meyers flew out, Martín Maldonado struck out and Mauricio Dubón singled to right field.
Meyers, whose full head of hair in the back helped cushion the blow, laid at the plate for a time before staying in the game and heading to first base on the hit-by-pitch.
