Astros starter J.P. France gave a stellar encore to his MLB debut.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - MAY 12: A general view of Guaranteed Rate Field during a rain delay of the game between the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros at Guaranteed Rate Field on May 12, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO — The Astros’ offense took a while to get going on Friday night, but their rookie pitcher held down the fort long enough for the Astros to beat the White Sox, 5-1, in a rain delayed series opener at Guaranteed Rate Field.

White Sox starter Michael Kopech labored through four innings on 73 pitches without allowing a hit, though the Astros put five runners on base in that span via four walks and a hit by pitch. After Tucker’s go-ahead hit chased Kopech off the mound, Martín Maldonado and Mauricio Dubón added insurance runs via back-to-back RBI doubles off White Sox reliever Gregory Santos, giving France ample run support for his final two frames.
