ASOS is one of the largest clothing brands in existence with thousands of shoppers purchasing their products every day.
But while shopping on their website or app might be a daily occurrence, not many people actually know about the background of the company and what ASOS actually means. ASOS is described as a: “destination for fashion-loving 20-somethings around the world, with a purpose to give its customers the confidence to be whoever they want to be.”
ASOS sells thousands of items of clothing, shoes, accessories and gifts but it all started from one simple idea. In 1999, Nick Robertson and Quentin Griffiths had the idea of starting a fashion business that copied the trending styles and designs worn by popular celebrities and also fashion items which had been seen on TV.At the time, they didn’t know that their small idea would grow into something as huge as ASOS is today.
The name ASOS is an acronym for “As Seen On Screen”, although many customers of the brand are unaware of this fact. It was initially known as “AsSeenOnScreen Limited” but the company had shortened the name to ASOS within less than a year. ASOS collaborates with some of the world's biggest names like Crayola, The Simpsons, LaQuan Smith, GLAAD and VFILES to design unique collections. It also owns Topshop after it went into administration in 2020 - with the clothes only available exclusively on ASOS' website and app.READ NEXT:
