James Witham has admitted manslaughter but denies 28-year-old council worker's murder
Ashley Dale's killer shopped in Liverpool ONE and deposited £1,000 into his bank account two days after he shot her dead.
The jury were then played a series of CCTV clips captured in Liverpool city centre the same day, showing Witham and his son shopping and eating in a restaurant. He was seen purchasing £245.94 of goods in Footasylum in Liverpool ONE - including a pair of size 8.5 Asics GEL-Quantum trainers, a baseball cap, a Nike Elemental Crossbody bag and socks - with cameras at the till capturing him taking cash from his passport and using it to pay.
That evening, cell siting data showed that Witham and Peers' phones travelled north to Scotland. On August 26, the former attempted to book a double room for one night at the Village Hotel in Whiston. Prosecution junior Alex Langhorn described how Peers and Witham stayed in separate king rooms at the Mercure Hotel in St Helens that night, paying in cash. The former was joined by his girlfriend Phoebe Birch before they checked out the following morning.
He and Witham were subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder at around 5pm on September 13 when the black Audi was stopped on the M6 southbound in Cumbria. Peers, who was the front seat passenger, replied "suspicion of murder?" as he was held. Mr Greaney said: "The men who had damaged the car were not deterred. Fifty minutes later, at about 12.30am, they returned.
