We chat with DarbyAndTheDead stars asherangel & imchosenjacobs about having fun on set and addressing the serious subject of grief in hulu's comedic film:
Now available to stream on Hulu, Darby and the Dead takes a realistic approach to grief without overwhelming its younger audience. After losing her mom and suffering a near-death experience, Darby discovers that she has developed the ability to communicate with the dead. However, when the school's Queen Bee, Capri, dies in a hair-straightening-related incident, she refuses to accept her fate and pass on to the other side.
Chosen Jacobs: I'm not a window shopper. I'm not trying to live here and not be able to participate. I'm ready to go.Chosen Jacobs: Follow the light. I'm out. Chosen, how often were you the one in the doughnut costume? Was it just when we could see your face? Or were you in it the entire time? Chosen Jacobs: I don't know, everything was hilarious. I think maybe during the party because it was late shoots. Everyone's deliriously tired which made everything funny. People were just making those jokes that aren't really funny, but you're so tired you laugh at them. Yeah, I'd say the party because we're all together.
Asher Angel: For sure. I think there's definitely a balance and I think Silas did a really great job of pushing me to that balance and that place where it's not too heavy. The whole film isn't super heavy—it's comedic, it's supernatural. I tried to do a little deep diving into that to find a place where it's balanced, and it makes sense, and it's not over the top. I think it turned out really great, and I'm happy with it.
