While many fans might think that the first Pokémon Ash ever caught was Pikachu, that isn't exactly accurate as that honor goes to another Pokémon.
The Pokémon Ash is most associated with, and the one who is remembered as being Ash’s first catch in the series, is Pikcahu–though, technically speaking, that wasn’t the case, and Ash’s real first catch is far more significant than many may remember.
Ash made his Pokémon debut in the first episode of the series, which introduced him as a boy who just turned ten years old and was therefore eligible to become a Pokémon trainer. In the first episode, Ash rushed to Professor Oak’s facility where he was given a Pokédex, Poké Balls, and his very first Pokémon–and that Pokémon was Pikachu.
The fact that the first Pokémon Ash caught was a Caterpie is an interesting piece of his history that may have been lost to time. Ash just recently proved himself the greatest trainer in the world, meaning he has caught, fought, and trained a great deal of Pokémon, with his first, Pikachu, being by his side all the while.
Caterpie was the perfect Pokémon for Ash in the classic sense during those early days, as it was able to win battles, evolve easily, and was a simple first catch. So, not only was Caterpie Ash’s first Pokémon catch , but Caterpie was also just as significant to Ash becoming the trainer that he is today.
