Manipulating someone via an ultimatum into behaving in a certain way, feels like incredibly cynical TV, with conflict and drama being its ultimate goal, not love. It’s clear that the manipulation is not only in the issuing of the ultimatum itself but also in the way in which the show has been contrived, which is for maximum discomfort.
They goad the contestants into engaging in situations that, in a real-life break from your partner, you’d almost never be exposed to. The girls all go for drinks together for example, where Madlyn seems to revel in the attraction building between herself and Shanique’s partner Randall, crudely describing touching “his boner” and flaunting their growing connection in front of the woman who has been with him for two years.
You can’t help but feel that absolutely none of these people are ready for marriage, ultimatum or not. At a time when we are craving love, and true romance over superficial connections more than ever, the shallowness and drama-baiting ofLet’s hope we keep dreaming about the real romance we all deserve and leave the social experiments behind.
